What is the Bleed Area and Why Is It Important?

 

When creating designs for print, you may hear the term Bleed Area.
It is an important part of preparing print-ready artwork and helps ensure your final product looks professional without unwanted white edges.
What is the Bleed Area? The bleed area is an extra margin that extends beyond the final cut size of the design.
This means that backgrounds, colors, or graphics that reach the edge of the product should continue slightly outside the visible design area into the bleed area.

Why is Bleed Important? During printing and cutting,assembly or sewing small movement or alignment differences can naturally happen.
Without bleed, this may result in:

• White edges appearing around the design
• Uneven borders
• Parts of the background being cut off

Adding bleed helps:

• Ensure edge-to-edge printing
• Create a cleaner, more professional result
• Reduce printing and cutting errors

What Should Be Inside the Bleed Area? The bleed area should usually contain:

• Background colors
• Patterns
• Extended artwork or non-essential design elements

What Should NOT Be Inside the Bleed Area? Avoid placing important elements inside the bleed area such as:

• Text
• Logos
• Faces
• Important details

These areas may be trimmed during production.
Important Tip Keep all important content inside the Safe Area, while extending backgrounds and colors into the bleed area.
This helps ensure your final printed product looks exactly as intended on Zink
